Things to Do in Port Stephens Near Fifty Five

Port Stephens is made for days outside — swimming, walking, paddling, eating seafood, watching dolphins and finding your way from one beautiful view to the next.

From Fifty Five on Sunrise Beach, you can keep things wonderfully simple with a swim or paddle out the front, or head a little further into Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, One Mile Beach and Anna Bay for some of the area’s best-loved adventures.

Visit Tomaree National Park

The Tomaree Head Summit Walk is one of the classic Port Stephens experiences, with wide views across Shoal Bay, Zenith Beach, Fingal Island and the coastline beyond.

For something more adventurous, explore part of the Tomaree Coastal Walk, which follows the coastline through beaches, headlands, bushland and beautiful pockets of the national park.

Both walks are best done with proper shoes, water and enough time to enjoy the view.

Watch dolphins on the bay

Dolphins are part of everyday life in Port Stephens, and you may be lucky enough to see them passing right out the front of Fifty Five.

For a closer experience, you can join a local dolphin watching cruise from Nelson Bay or book with an operator such as Dolphin Swim Australia or Imagine Cruises. Depending on the season, whale watching tours may also be available.

Paddle, kayak or SUP

If you would rather stay close to the water, Port Stephens is ideal for paddleboarding, kayaking and gentle bay adventures.

At Fifty Five, kayaks and SUPs are available for guests to use, with terms and safety information provided in the house guide. You can also hire paddleboards around Shoal Bay through operators such as Shoal Bay SUP if you are exploring further afield.

Take a surf lesson at One Mile Beach

For something a little more active, One Mile Beach is a beautiful ocean beach and a popular spot for surf lessons.

It is a great option for older kids, teens or adults who want to try something new while staying in Port Stephens. Check conditions, swim between the flags where available, and book with a local surf school such as Port Stephens Surf School.

Visit Fingal Beach and Kiddies Corner

Fingal Bay is a favourite for families, beach walks and relaxed days by the water. Kiddies Corner is especially lovely for younger children, with calmer shallows and a more sheltered feel.

Pack the beach gear, take snacks, and make it an easy half-day trip.

Explore the Birubi Beach sand dunes

The sand dunes at Birubi Beach and the Worimi Conservation Lands are one of the most memorable landscapes in Port Stephens.

You can experience the dunes through guided tours, sandboarding, 4WD experiences or camel rides, depending on what is available when you visit. Sand Dune Adventures is one local operator to look into.

Come home to Sunrise Beach

After a day out exploring Port Stephens, come back to Fifty Five for a swim, a hot outdoor shower, dinner on the deck and the sound of the bay settling for the night.
